Uniformed men provoke crowd trouble in stadiums - Tambe Bernard, football referee
Tambe Bernard is a second division referee in the South West province. In this interview with Ashu Manfred in Kumba he talks about the problem of crowd trouble and how FECAFOOT discriminates against Anglophone referees.
Tambe says the forces of law and order are sometimes to blame for football violence and concludes that only the construction of stadiums with perimeter fences can stop fans from molesting match officials.
Have you ever been a victim of violence in the stadium?
Not yet because I do my job with impartiality. But I almost fell victim in Mutengene sometime ago. I was officiating a game between Tarzan Mutengene and Limbe FC. The local fans tried to pressure me disallow a penalty for Limbe FC. But I stood my grounds and awarded the penalty. The crowd threatened to beat me up.
Some people accuse the forces of law and order of causing violence in stadiums too. What do you think?
The forces of law and order certainly contribute to crowd trouble. Some stand at the gates, collect money from fans and let them in, thereby cheating the clubs. Others openly side with teams and encourage wild fans to attack match officials. However, there are some responsible ones who really protect us from
irate, ignorant crowds.
What do you suggest as solution to football violence?
The government and FECAFOOT should construct stadiums with perimeter fences. This will prevent spectators from coming onto the touch line, near match officials.
The population too should learn the rules of football before they criticise referees. They should also understand that their teams cannot always win.
But referees too are accused of provoking fans when they take bribe and become partial?
That may be true, but as an individual I have never taken money from a team in order to favour them on the pitch. It will be unfair for me to say some referees have never been bribed.
However, club officials should stop running behind referees to offer them money. It’s when they are corrupt that the referee becomes partial, because no referee will go out on his own to ask for bribe.
On several occasions you have had hard words for national FECAFOOT officials. Why?
Because I feel they discriminate against Anglophone referees, who are even the best in the country. Anglophone referees hardly get promoted, exams in Yaounde are organised only in French and Anglophone referees are not regularly assigned. These are just some of the things they do to us.
