In Cameroon Like in Egypt (25.01.2006)
Many Cameroonians enjoy watching matches in public places.
Cameroonians show a high level of patriotism is when sports, particularly football is concerned. Since the kick-off of the 25th edition of the African Cup of Nations in Egypt, normal daily life has changed in Cameroon. Be it in big towns and cities or in the villages, commentaries about players’ performances of previous matches are on the lips of most Cameroonians in offices, homes, busses, taxis, business places, etc.
As from 3:30 pm, most workers hurry home in order to watch the matches which begin as from 4:00 pm. Few Cameroonians can be comfortable missing any of the day’s matches especially when the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are playing. Streets in major towns are deserted during matches. Some drivers even park their taxis to watch at least the first half of a match before continuing their job. Some people invite friends to watch matches in their homes.
In many homes children no longer have study hours as they spend their out-of-school hours watching football on TV screens. some parents are praying that the African Nations Cup should come to an end quickly so that children will have time to
work. Some people prefer to watch the matches in their offices depending on the nature of their job but the majority prefer bars and other public places. In such places there are people of all walks of life. Some do not only comment on the match but equally speculate on the result of matches, others draw up possible line-ups of the national team.
Bar owners are making brisk business these days as those who come to watch matches automatically buy drinks. Mme Mbarga, owner of a in town said her sales have increased since last Friday when the football tournament began. "Sales are particularly high when the Indomitable Lions are playing," she said. Some bar owners have put up giant screens to attract many customers. During this period, electric cuts are unpardonable in all areas. In Abong Mbang in the East Province, students are reported to have gone to the streets to protest against electric cuts in town thus preventing them from watching the Nations Cup. It is said that solutions were found by the local staff of the energy company to avoid chaos in that locality. As the competition unfolds, Cameroonians are getting more and more interested. Their dream is to cheer the Lions to victory.
