Champions League: Eto’o Lifts Barcelona to Glory (18.05.2006)
The Cameroonian-born striker scored a decisive goal in yesterday’s final at Stade de France.
It was one of the most eagerly awaited Champions League final in recent times. Barcelona were the favourites. And so it came to pass. Yesterday’s final at the Stade de France proved bookmakers right. Barcelona came back from a goal down to beat 10-man Arsenal, 2-1, to win their second European Cup. The Barcelona victory gives Spain a rare European double this season after Sevilla beat Middlesbrough, 4-1, in the UEFA Cup. It is the first time since 1997 that both trophies are going to teams from one country. The match was a classic. For the third time since the competition began in 1992, two sides with a faultless record were playing the final. Hitherto yesterday’s final, the two teams had recorded eight victories and four draws each in their first 12 matches.
It was a hotly disputed encounter. But, the beauty of the show was almost marred by several foul plays. Arsenal started off strongly. Barely three minutes into the encounter, Thierry Henry missed two great chances to give the "Gunners" an astounding lead when he came face to face with goalkeeper Victor Valdes. In a superb move, the agile goalkeeper saved the close range shot. Eto’o and his team mates fought back to break through Arsenal’s defence. The efforts would have paid off at the 18th minute when Eto’o almost drove home the curtain raiser after he dribbled pass the Arsenal defence. Arsenal keeper, Lehmann, however came out of his area and dragged Eto’o down. The foul
play earned him a Red card. Jens Lehmann thus became the first player to be sent off during a Champions League or European Cup final. Substitute goalkeeper, Manuel Almunia, came in and Robert Pires sent out. The series of foul play continued with Eboue receiving a yellow card at the 20th minutes for a dreadful hard tackle on Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The onslaught of the Londoners paid off at the 37th minute when defender, Sol Campbell, put Arsenal ahead with a close range header from Thierry Henry`s right-wing free-kick. All efforts by Barcelona to equalise before half time failed.
The second half started off slowly with Arsenal setting the pace once more. Arsenal looked to be on course for victory as Barcelona’s star player Ronaldinho, made several untargeted kicks. The much needed equaliser came from Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o some 14 minutes to the end of the match. He drove the ball home after a pass from substitute Henrik Larsson. Three minutes after, substitute defender Juliano Belletti, shattered the dream of the "Gunners" to join an elite group of four other clubs (Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus) to have won titles in all three traditional European club competitions - European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup (formerly Fairs Cup).
With victory on their side, Barcelona held on to the ball with plenty of cool in the closing stages of the match, halting each frantic effort by Arsenal to draw level. The victory gave Barcelona European club soccer`s most coveted trophy for the second time.
