Cameroon-Germany Preview(Yahoo) (10.06.2002)
GAME: Cameroon (1-0-1) vs. Germany (1-0-1) at Shizuoka, Japan.
GROUP: E
TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. EDT.
Rarely has a first goal been so important as the one that could happen in the final game of Group E play for Germany and Cameroon.
That marker will very likely push the team that scores it into the World Cup round of 16.
Germany enters Tuesday`s game with an advantage because it needs only a tie to advance to the knockout round on the strength of its plus-8 goal differential, the highest of any team in the 32-team tournament.
``The tension is rising and the nervousness is there,`` German forward Marco Bode said. ``This could be a positive thing, too. A lot depends on this match. If we win, we could get a lot of confidence for the rest of the tournament.``
But both squads are leery of losing a spot in the second round to Ireland, which will probably gain the full three points against lowly Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
A win by Ireland would give it five points, and the Irish already have an advantage over Cameroon on goals scored.
``If Cameroon is to advance to the next round, then nothing else can be important to us,`` said Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer, who was born in Germany. ``Our goal is to advance to the second round. We play our third game against Germany with the same sense of priority as our other two matches.``
Rudi Voeller`s team squandered a chance to clinch a second-round spot, conceding a goal to Ireland in the final minutes of a 1-1 draw Wednesday. Miloslav Klose gave Germany a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute with a strong header for his fourth goal of the tournament, but he was slowed by a knee injury and eventually replaced in the 85th minute as Voeller`s squad tried to protect the lead.
Klose, a 24-year-old striker who has 12 goals in 14 international appearances, is expected to be fully fit for Tuesday`s match.
Also riding on the game is Germany`s string of reaching the knockout round in every World Cup for which it has qualified.
Cameroon did
justenough to secure three points against Saudi Arabia, earning a 1-0 victory Thursday. Samuel Eto`o scored in the 66th minute for the ``Indomitable Lions,`` who are trying to claim a spot in the second round for the first time since their stunning run to the quarterfinals in 1990 in Italy.
The goal provided some vindication for the 21-year-old Eto`o, who has been criticized in the Cameroon press for not scoring more in the first two matches. Eto`o did assist on Patrick Mboma`s goal in the 1-1 tie with Ireland to open group play.
``I`m glad everyone thinks I`m the best striker of the Lions but it makes me sick that Cameroon does not recognize all the work I`ve done,`` Eto`o, a member of Real Mallorca, said. ``If the population of Yaounde and the rest of Cameroon is not happy, what can I do? Soccer is not just about one player but about teamwork.
``And must I remind everyone I was elected player of the match both times and that I was involved in both goals and the four points we have?``
The top two teams from this group will play the top two teams from Group B, which will be Spain and either South Africa or Paraguay, in the second round.
