Barcelona 3 Shakhtar Donetsk 0 (30.09.2004)
Barcelona swept aside Shakhtar Donetsk at the Nou Camp to continue their 100% start to the Champions League campaign.
Deco opened the scoring after 20 minutes before a second half penalty for Ronaldinho and an 88th-minute Samuel Eto`o goal saw off a spirited Shakhtar side.
Barca began the game with plenty of possession in midfield and Eto`o and Ronaldinho lively in attack.
The first sign of danger to the visitors` defence however came from defender Juliano Belletti who curled a left-footed shot an inch past the post.
Shakhtar were struggling to get hold of the ball and were at the mercy of Barca`s attacks.
Deco made the breakthrough although his shot had a slice of fortune, coming off Razvan Rat`s leg.
Following a delightful one-two with Eto`o, Ronaldinho played the ball to the right of the area for the Brazilian-born Portuguese international to run onto.
Deco controlled the ball but his low drive was going wide before hitting Rat and sneaking in the far corner.
Shakhtar did have a free-kick by Anatoliy Tymoshchuk which went close and Zvonimir Vukic made some lively moves from midfield to ease the threat from Barca.
Barca perhaps were guilty of over-elaborating, at times making one too many passes.
The home side almost put together a dream goal after 25 minutes when Deco, Ronaldinho and Eto`o exchanged passes but the Cameroon international was too close to the keeper when he shot and Jan Lastuvka was able to block.
Shakhtar did show a couple of promising signs before the break but their final ball was poor.
Vukic was the instigator on the two occasions, first playing in Ciprian Marica for a half chance which was blocked by defender and then Brandao hit a woeful cross-shot when well placed in the area.
Shakhtar brought on Andriy Vorobyey at half-time for Brandao as the visitors searched for an equaliser.
The Ukrainian outfit did threaten in the opening minutes when Francelino
Matuzalem had a shot blocked from close range.
Barca too went close a few minutes later through Ludovic Giuly and Deco had a shot from the edge of the area which was comfortable for the keeper.
But Shakhtar`s hopes of recovery took a serious blow after 63 minutes when Ronaldinho bagged a penalty.
Having been played through on goal Lastuvka initially saved an attempted chip by the Brazilian but was then adjudged to have pushed him as Ronaldinho attempted to regain possession.
Ronaldinho himself got up to convert the penalty and send Lastuvka the wrong way from the spot.
With Shakhtar forced to push forward gaps inevitably bagan to be exposed with the Barca forward line keen to take advantage.
Giuly was replaced by Henrik Larsson after 75 minutes and the Swede was afforded a tremendous welcome from the home crowd.
He very nearly scored with his second touch after a one-two with Eto`o put him one-on-one with the keeper but Lastuvka was able to block. Larsson then had a header cleared off the line from the resulting corner.
Then it was the turn of Eto`o to be denied as his powerful shot was blocked by the legs of Lastuvka.
But Eto`o finally scored after 88 minutes with a tap-in after being played the ball by Andres Iniesta and with the keeper already beaten.
