Egypt win thriller in Cairo (05.09.2004)
Egypt held off a late Cameroon comeback led by Barcelona striker Samuel Eto`o to win a thrilling World Cup qualifying match 3-2 in Cairo on Sunday.
Goals from Mohammed Shawki in the 45th minute, an Ahmed Hassan penalty in the 71st minute and Tarek al-Sayed in the 90th gave the home side a 3-0 lead with just injury time left.
But Eto`o, Cameroon`s African player of the Year, scored twice in the first and third minutes of injury time, bringing a Cairo stadium packed with 30,000 fans to its feet.
Egypt held on to win and tie for second place in Group Three on seven points, along with Cameroon and Libya.
Ivory Coast are top of the group with nine
points, after trouncing Sudan 5-0 on Sunday.
Africa`s most expensive footballer Didier Drogba opened the scoring with an 11th-minute penalty before Anderlecht`s Aruna Dindane scored the first of his two goals four minutes later.
When Gilles Yapi Yapo grabbed the Elephants` third after 25 minutes, the rout was on and Bakary Kone and Dindane plundered further goals in the second half.
Libya beat Benin 4-1 on Friday thanks to goals from Younes Shebany, Nader Kara, Ahmed Osman and Marei Suliman.
