Mt Cameroon Race : Inter-Ministerial Team Takes Stock (15.02.2006)

How prepared is Buea to host this year`s Mount Cameroon Race of Hope slated for February 26 Will the local organizing committee be sidelined at the behest of officials from Yaounde, accused of monopolising the financial aspect of the competition ?
In an attempt to ensure a hitch-free organization and success to the event, an inter-ministerial delegation led by Mr Ahmadou Paul, Secretary General of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, was in Buea lsat week to take stock of the preparations. Ahmadou Paul highlighting the objectives of the visit (which, he said, revolved on ensuring a proper organisation of the race, learn lessons of the past "because last year`s race was not the best in terms of organisation"); Both local officials and those from Yaounde gave a balance-sheet of their preparations and problems in their various domains.
The Mayor of Buea, Mbella Moki Charles said his municipality was once more honoured to host the race whose preparations coincide with the ongoing international trade fair in Buea. The South West Delegate for Communication, Nkong Makoge Wilfred called for what he termed the "decentralisation" of the budget and for local officials to be treated in a
"dignified manner". He revealed that the Communication Sub-Committee was always sidelined.
The South West Provincial Delegate for Public Health, Dr Mafany complained of water problems in last year`s race, called for more doctors and nurses, and for money before the race because his Sub-Committee will start working "between February 24-25 to examine the athletes and ensure the transportation and upkeep of medical professionals up to the mountain a day before the competition." Other problems that surfaced pegged on the maintenance of Huts One, Two and Three that have been made "unsuitable" by tourists, the payment of musicians before the event.
The meeting offered an opportunity for Mr Ange Sama, President of the Cameroon Athletics Federation who doubles as the national Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, to pinpoint some major innovations in this year`s race.
On a note that probably annoyed some officials who target the race for personal ends, Mr Ahmadou Paul stressed that when money shall be made available in the coming weeks, "the envelopes for the various Sub-Committees shall be disbursed in front of all the members of the committee in an open, transparent manner and the amount made known. This is to avoid problems and apportion blame elsewhere !"
