Cameroon elections delayed (26.04.2004)
A week after being fined and docked six points from their World Cup qualifying campaign, Cameroon may be heading for another sanction from Fifa.
After Bidoung Mkpatt was sacked as Minister of Sports on Friday, the government issued a statement sending an inquiry committee to the Cameroon football federation, Fecafoot.
As yet, no members of the committee have been named nor has the government specified what the committee will be inquiring into.
However, in the statement, the government did demand that Siegfried Etame Massoma, Cameroon`s new sports minister, `rapidly review the statute of Fecafoot prior to any elections`.
As a result, the Fecafoot congress that was scheduled to elect a new president on Saturday has been indefinitely postponed.
There are fears that the Cameroon government`s decision violates Fifa rules which state that
there should be no governmental interference in the running of national football associations.
"The decision calling for a revision of Fecafoot`s statutes even violates the Cameroon Sports Charter enacted by government itself," an official at the Ministry of Sport remarked.
"That law gives sport associations the power to adopt their statues."
The government`s decision to postpone the elections may cause Fifa to put a ban on Cameroon, just as the body did in 1998 when the Cameroon government imposed caretaker managers of Fecafoot against Fifa`s will.
Three candidates are vying for the presidency, including Jean Baptist Nguini, former Fecafoot chief Vincent Onana and the current Fecafoot boss Mohammed Iya.
In the meantime, delegates who are in Yaounde for the Fecafoot congress are awaiting instruction on when the convention will be held.
