Who Was Africa’s Best Footballer for 2003? (30.04.2004)
Samuel Eto’o Fils, Jay Jay Okocha or Didier Drogba. The answer this evening.
The best African footballer for 2003, will be known today. The award ceremony will take place in Yaounde. Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o Fils, who plays for Real Mollorca, has been short-listed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) alongside Super Eagles’ captain, Jay Jay Okocha and Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba who plays for French side Marseilles.
The race for the crown is stiff as all the players put on scintillating performances for their clubs and countries in 2003. Eto’o Fils, for example, was the best striker in his club and considered highly important to its success in the Spanish King’s Cup which was going on at the same moment with the FIFA Confederations Cup. The 23-year-old striker showed rare physical stamina in the two competitions, winning the Spanish King’s Cup with his club and playing all of Cameroon’s matches but for the semi final. In the 2001 awards, Eto’o Fils was placed third with 34 votes behind Senegal’s El Hadj Diouf and Samuel Osei Kuffor of Ghana.
Bolton Wanderers wonder boy, Jay Jay Okocha, on the other hand, is gifted, strong, a maestro and an embodiment of dribbling skills. The 30-year-old ball joggler is at the center of the game in his club and country. It is thanks to him that his club survived relegation last season. They also reached the final of this season’s Carling Cup,
courtesy of Okocha’s goals and leadership. In 1998, Okocha was second African player after Morocco’s forward, Mustapha Hadji. He could be greatly favored if the voting takes into consideration performances at the 2004 African Cup of Nations where he was crowned best player. But this will not be the case.
The third nominee is Ivory Coast and Olympique Marseille’s star, Didier Drogba. The 26-year-old lad made his name while playing for Guingamp last season. He capped the season with 17 goals to become the highest goal scorer of the tournament. He can be considered a victim of his country’s inability to appear in major tournaments.
Yaounde is already bustling to the rhythm of the event. The town has been swarned with several sports reporters from all over Africa, notably Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. There are still doubts as to whether all the nominees will be at today’s event. What is certain, however, is that Jay Jay Okocha would not be in Yaounde. He told a local radio in Lagos that he must meet his English Premiership commitment to Bolton. "I will not be in Cameroon for the awards because Bolton will be playing an important game against Leeds United on Sunday", he said. Eto’o Fils, on the other hand, would be present in Yaounde. Latest report hold that he will arrived in Cameroon this afternoon on board a special plane hired by his team which will take him back to Spain immediately the ceremony is over.
