Athletics: African Veterans in Yaounde (30.07.2004)
Some 200 athletes from 11 African countries are taking part in the fifth edition of the African Masters Athletics Championship.
The fifth edition of the African Masters Athletics championship (AMA), kicked-off in the nation’s capital city, Yaounde, yesterday. The competition, which will be the first to be hosted in the Cameroon, will bring together some 200 athletes from 11 countries in Africa. The competition will run from July 29 to August 1, 2004.
Participating countries are South Africa, Mauritius, Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cameroon. The revelation was made yesterday during a press briefing granted by AMA officials in Yaounde. Present at the press briefing were officials of the Cameroon Masters Athletics Federation, athletes, as well as pressmen. During four days, the athletes will be vying for medals in the different disciplines in track and field. These include Marathon race, Hammer, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Weight Throw, High Jump, Walk, Long Jump, Steeple Chase, Pole Vault, Hurdles, among others.
Speaking during
theoccasion, the President of the African Masters Athletics Federation, South African born Hannes Booysen, said that the press briefing was historic because the AMA championship is taking place north of the equator for the first time. He congratulated the Cameroon Master’s Athletics Federation for making the first move to host the African Masters Athletics championship in this part of the continent. He said his dream is to develop African Masters Athletics in the African continent.
Over 150 local athletes have already registered for the competition. More athletes are still expected. Registration fee is CFA 3,000. As for foreign athletes, some 20 athletes arrived in the country last evening. According to the organisers, all the athletes will be awarded medals of participation. The official opening ceremony has been billed for tomorrow at 10: 00am at the Yaounde Ominisport stadium.
The African Masters Athletics Championship takes place once in every two years. Instituted since 1975 by an association of veterans, the first African Masters Athletics Championship only came to the limelight in 1994 in Durban, South Africa.
