World Cup : Lions Keep Hope Alive (20.06.2005)
Cameroon maintain second position in Group C after yesterday’s 1 — 0 victory over Libya.
Cameroon 1, Libya 0. Although the score was not impressive, the essential was done. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon succeeded to grab three points from yesterday’s encounter against their Libyan counterparts at the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. The match was one of the Day 8 encounters in the on going qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup and African Cup of Nations. The victory enabled the Indomitable Lions to have 17 points, two behind Côte d’Ivoire (19 points) that confirmed their supremacy in the group after beating Egypt in Abidjan, 2 — 0, yesterday.
The match started off very well for the Indomitable Lions with swift precise passes. Captain Song and his mates dominated the entire first half of the encounter. Libya, as usual, played a defensive game, concentrating around their goal area. But this time, the tactic of playing for a draw failed. Coach Artur Jorge’s boys succeeded in breaking the human wall mounted by Terek El Taib and his mates. After several futile attempts at the goal by Eto’o, Geremi, Rudolph Douala, etc, Ossasuna strong man, Achille Webo, headed in the curtain raiser at the 37th minute; following a cross from Geremi. Coach Loncarevic Ilija’s boys could have bagged more goals before half time had the Lions materialized the many
scoring opportunities.
The Libyans came in stronger in the second half; daring into the Cameroonian goal area. Coach Loncarevic Ilija brought in four players who added vigour to the attack. Their few onslaughts of the Libyans were however futile as all shots were stopped by goalkeeper Souleymanou Hamidou. Eto’o Fils and his mates continued to miss scoring opportunities. Libyan goalkeeper, Luis Alejandro, was also vigilant and stopped the ball from touching his net several times. The Lions lost steam as the minutes died down. The substitution of Rudolph Douala, Olembe Salomon and Webo achile for Ngom Kome, Makoun Jean and Djemba Djemba, could not bring in the much needed pump. The Lions won, 1 — 0, but failed to impress the over 38,000 spectators at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. The Indomitable Lions however could be praised for a game void of any foul play. The Libyans, on the other hand were aggressive with players such as Salem Rewani and Tarik El Taib booked for foul play and contesting referee Koman Coulibaly`s decision.
The 9th playing day on September 4 in Côte d’Ivoire will certainly be the most decisive in Group C. Group leaders, Côte d’Ivoire with 19 points will receive the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon with 17 points in Abidjan. The Lions are bound to beat the elephants to keep their dream of participating in the 2006 World Cup alive.
