Coton Sport Garoua enter history books (16.01.2004)

The major feature of the sports season last year was the taking of the double in football by Coton Sport Garoua. Though the giants from the north had dominated domestic football since gaining admission in the national division one league in 1993, they had never had an eventful season like last year.
For the first time they reached the final of a continental trophy, though they lost 0-2 on aggregate to Raja Casablanca. Before last season, they had won the league title three times and finished vice champions four times.
Last season they took the title two days before the end and finished with an 11-point gap on top. Then they took the cup by coming from behind to beat Sable Batie 2-1 at the final. Only Canon and Tonnerre Yaounde had ever won a double in Cameroon’s 45-year history of official football. Tonnerre were the last club to do so in 1987.
By notching that feat, Coton Sport have now completely shattered the southern hegemony in football. After clubs from the West province pulled national attention to them, away from the traditional Yaounde and Douala city clubs in the 90’s, Coton Sport may have safely taken it to the northern pool, which had two of theirs promoted to division one.
For insiders, it was only a matter of time for Coton Sport to reach the upper stage. Owned by the cotton production and marketing company, SODECOTON, the club is one of the most structured and best managed club with a huge purse in Cameroon.
Their big money, according to local standards, has offered them the best of talents Cameroonian youths possess. They are also one of the few teams who have recruited foreign players and a coach.
Playersearn as much as 150.000 Francs as monthly pay. That is a luxury to players in many clubs.
Players have come from Liberia, Nigeria, Chad and DR Congo. Senegalese born Lamine Ndiaya is having a second spell with the club.
Lamine gathered enormous experience playing for Senegal between 1977 and 1992 and played for French sides Cannes and Mulhouse, which he also managed following an end to his football career in 1993. Limine offered Coton Sport a league title and reached the semi finals of the Caf Cup in 2001.
There is no doubt that Coton Sport have been the most consistent club in the last ten years. Their only failure has been at the international level where they have won no title, except taking the silver medal in last year’s Caf Cup.
That makes them no different from all Cameroonian clubs as none has won any continental title in 22 years. But if many big companies like the CDC, Brasseries du Cameroun, SONARA, SNH, PMUC, MTN and Orange could follow the example of SODECOTON, then Cameroon football will drastically improve and the teams will be able to win titles.
The clubs will be managed along professional lines as players will earn good pay, concentrate on their job to improve on their talent. Canon, Tonnerre, Union Douala and Racing Bafoussam are all very tired and old horses plagued by problems of primitive management.
The other teams simply do not have the means. It was a miracle to see PWD Bamenda do so well in the league, finishing third. They even topped the table at the end of the first round. But if management does not become professional in PWD, their international campaign will be a disaster and they will go the way of Kumbo Strikers.
