Nations Cup: Cameroon Under Pressure (22.09.2003)
The Indomitable Lions would face Algeria, Zimbabwe and Egypt in the first round of the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia next year.
The 16 teams to participate in the final phase of the 24th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations billed for January 24th to February 14th 2004 in Tunisia, know their adversaries in the first round. The draws were made last Saturday in Tunis, Tunisia, in the presence of the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, the Chairman of the local organising committee, Chiboub Slim, the Chairman of the Tunisian Football Federation, Ben Ammar Hammouda and representatives of the 16 finalists. The teams have been divided in four groups of four with Tunisia, Senegal, Cameroon and Nigeria heading group A, B, C and D respectively.
Group C, headed by current Champions, Cameroon, has been considered one of the toughest. The Indomitable Lions will have to sharpen their claws to fight for a place in the second round. Judging from the past performances of teams in the Lion’s den, Egypt will be a hard nut to crack. The Pharoes have been crowned football kings of Africa four times — 1957, 1959, 1986 and 1998. Added to this superiority complex is the fact that Egypt, just like Algeria, will be sailing in familiar waters. They would be playing
in a familiar setting, the North Africa region. Climate will therefore not be a problem to them. Even newcomers Zimbabwe have promised to make their presence felt at the tournament. History has proven that in such competitions although the favourites most often have their way, outsiders (Zimbabwe in this case) at times create great surprises.
If we have to go by bookmakers, host country, Tunisia will have a swift sail into the second phase of the competition. Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea and Rwanda, its group level opponents are considered as average or light weights in football. Group B, which brings together Senegal, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Mali remains the most open. All teams seemingly have the same chance of making it into the next round. Group D promises to be one of great challenges. Newcomer, Benin, will be in real trouble as teams of substance such as Nigeria, Morocco and South Africa will be fighting for the two available places.
The tournament will be played in six venues namely: 7th November Rades Stadium, El Menzah Stadium, Sousse Stadium, Monastir Stadium, 15th October Bizerte Stadium and Mhiri Stadium Sfax. These venues were visited last week by CAF officials. Tunisia and Rwanda will play the opening match on 24th January 2004 at the 7th November Rades Stadium.
