Ireland-Cameroon Preview (31.05.2002)
GAME: Ireland vs. Cameroon at Niigata, Japan.
GROUP: E
TIME: Saturday, 2:30 a.m. EDT.
With a backdrop of the greatest turmoil in the history of its national soccer program, Ireland tries to make do without superstar midfielder Roy Keane as it plays Cameroon in the group opener for both squads.
The mercurial Keane, considered the emotional linchpin of both fabled British side Manchester United and the Irish national team, was sent home last week by coach Mick McCarthy after the two were embroiled in a tense screaming match on the pitch during practice.
The two have been at loggerheads the entire time since the row, trading accounts through the media. Keane`s absence has left all of Ireland -- among the most passionate supporters of its soccer team in the world -- worried the team will not be able to advance out of a rugged group that also includes three-time World Cup champion Germany and Saudi Arabia.
``I do not consider that the best interests of Irish football will be served by my returning to the World Cup. The damage has been done,`` Keane said in a statement to Irish state broadcaster RTE in response to a statement issued by McCarthy that said ``the interests of the squad are best served without Roy`s presence.``
In addition, Keane`s departure leaves Ireland with a 22-man roster. An appeal to FIFA to replace him was rejected because Keane is not injured, and therefore, cannot be replaced due to medical reasons.
Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer, however, sees Keane`s absence as another reason to be more wary of the physical Irish squad. Schaefer sees a team possibly more united and more focused to advance.
``Roy Keane is one of the best midfielders in the world right now,`` Schaefer said. ``However, his absence is no advantage to us. Without him, the Irish players will no doubt unite even more.
``I think it may even be more difficult for us.``
But the Irish do have some solid players, namely goalkeeper Shay Given and veteran forward Niall Quinn. While Given will be making his World Cup debut, he has thrived in pressure situations and recently
helped English side Newcastle United secure a berth in the 2002-03 Champions League.
Quinn has 21 goals, the most of any Irish player, and will be looking to make up for lost time after missing the 1994 World Cup due to injury. The 35-year-old Quinn, though, did score a goal in 1990, when he helped Ireland reach the knockout round.
Cameroon has become the standard other nations have measured their progress against on the African continent. The ``Indomitiable Lions`` burst onto the scene with a stunning quarterfinals appearance at Italy in 1990 but failed to make it out of group play in 1994 and 1998.
But this group appears poised to reverse that trend. Cameroon has captured the last two African Cup titles and also won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympics, and its roster is dotted with impact players who are spread throughout European-based teams.
The key to Cameroon`s hopes lie with forward Patrick Mboma, who plays for British side Sunderland. Mboma, who had three goals in the African Cup, has been having trouble with his right Achilles`, straining the tendon on hard starts and swift turns.
``Patrick Mboma is getting regular treatment every day by our medical staff and independently he does training for his foot,`` Schaefer said Wednesday. ``His injury has stabilized.
``I`m very hopeful that he will be fit to play in our opening game Saturday against Ireland.``
Ireland will play its next group game June 5 against Germany, while Cameroon will play Saudi Arabia the following day.
