Mboma fires Verdy past Marinos (05.06.2004)

YOKOHAMA--Cameroon striker Patrick Mboma produced the perfect answer to his critics at Mitsuzawa Stadium on Saturday with a stunning goal that gave Tokyo Verdy 1969 a 2-1 win over Yokohama F Marinos in the Nabisco Cup.
Mboma, on the bench for a second successive game, scored a goal of the season contender 20 minutes from time to guarantee Verdy the three points and prove to manager Ossie Ardiles that he remains the club`s most potent attacking force.
After last week`s 3-0 win over Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Ardiles voiced his intention to sign a new striker during the summer but, following his introduction early in the second half, Mboma showed he believes he remains the solution to Tokyo`s goal scoring problem.
"I often make a difference when I come on and I had to do that today to prove a point," he said. "If I don`t start then I have to show to everyone that I can do something special."
Before Mboma`s appearance in place of Naoto Sakurai, Verdy looked in danger of being overwhelmed as Marinos--missing five internationals from their usual starting lineup--pushed for the opener after the restart.
The upsurge in activity around the Verdy penalty area was in stark contrast to an opening 45 minutes which boasted little in the way of serious action.
That all changed in the second half as Marinos took command, with wingback Dutra instrumental in Yokohama`s spell of dominance.
It was from the Brazilian`s corner that Daisuke Nasu forced a remarkable reflex save from Yoshinari Takagi in the Verdy goal six minutes after the break and, two minutes later, Dutra saw his free kick beaten away. Dutra again supplied the ammunition in the 55th minute when his cross from the left was headed wide by Naoki Matsuda.
A minute later, on came Mboma, the Olympic Games gold medal-winning striker bringing with him a physical presence in attack and an outlet for the Tokyo midfield.
By the 64th minute, Verdy were in front with Mboma playing a key role, heading
Daigo Kobayashi`s corner goalward, only for Tatsuya Enomoto`s reflex save to deny him. But while the reflex save denied Mboma, Yoshiyuki Kobayashi reacted first to head home.
Six minutes later, Mboma stunned Mitsuzawa Stadium with a goal of power, precision and sheer class.
Receiving the ball with his back to goal from Daigo Kobayashi some 30 meters out, the 33-year-old turned before lashing into Enomoto`s top right corner to score the kind of spectacular goal he became known for in his spell with Gamba Osaka.
It was a devastating blow to Marinos` chances, although Dutra finally prospered from a set-piece when he curled his 73rd-minute free kick around Verdy`s wall.
"It was a super goal and it was a good game," said Marinos manager Takeshi Okada. "This is the first time we have lost in 14 games and it`s very difficult to keep a run like that going."
Verdy are now three points clear at the top of Group A, with Marinos retaining second position despite Sanfrecce Hiroshima`s 2-0 win over Cerezo Osaka.
Meanwhile, Jubilo Iwata picked up their first Nabisco Cup win against Gamba Osaka, emerging 3-2 victors. A double by Yasumasa Nishino and penalty from Rodrigo Gral gave Jubilo a 3-0 lead inside the first half hour before two goals from Masashi Oguro pulled Gamba back into the game. Nagoya Grampus Eight extended their lead at the top of the group to four points with a 1-0 win in Niigata against Albirex.
In Group C, goals from Sandro and Kohei Kudo gave JEF United Ichihara a 2-0 over Oita Trinita, moving Ivica Osim`s team onto nine points. The group`s other clash, between Urawa Reds and Shimizu S-Pulse was an evening kickoff.
Kashiwa Reysol overcame their struggles in the league to defeat Kashima Antlers 2-0 in Group D. Takehito Shigehara gave Reysol the lead on the stroke of halftime and Yuji Unozawa put the result beyond doubt with seven minutes to go.
FC Tokyo went to the top of the group by beating Vissel Kobe 2-1 at National Stadium in the lone evening match Sunday.
