Indomitable Lions are fully back on track (30.01.2004)

After a draw in their first game in the Nations Cup, the Indomitable Lions have reasserted themselves as favorites with a 5-3 win over Zimbabwe in Sfax. It was more so a great day for striker Patrick Mboma who netted in three of the five goals, leaving Modeste Mbami the chance to finish up the remaining two.
But it was a difficult game for the Lions who were left with no breathing space from the beginning. Skipper Peter Ndlovu headed in the curtain raiser for Zimbabwe in the 7th minute, to the greatest shock of the over 15.000 fans who had put their bets on Cameroon.
It was after the goal that the Lions took things serious. After beautiful mastery of the ball and game, Mboma equalized 21 minutes later. There after it was virtually a one man show, with occasional dangerous counter attacks from the Warriors of Zimbabwe. Ndlovu and Wilfred Mugeri were proving too strong and rapid for Cameroon’s defense of three - Rigobert Song, Bill Tchato and Perrier Doumbe.
With little effort, Cameroon kept control of the game. Mbami and Eric Djemba Djemba stabilised matters at the midfield. To make the domination fruitful, Mbami made it 2-1 for Cameroon in the 37th minute, before Mboma made 3-1 at half time.
But like the first half, Zimbabwe resumed spiting fire. Song was
forced to foul Joel Luphahla in the box in the first minute after resumption. Ndlovu stepped up to net in Zimbabwe’s second goal, this time from the penalty spot.
The goal encouraged Zimbabwe to come up forcefully. But were silenced by two more goals from Mbami and Mboma. Zimbabwe could not die easily and pulled one back two minutes to full time.
Head coach Winnie Schaefer argued that the late goal was caused by the substitutes who were not quick to find their feet. Schaefer also refused to completely blame the defense for the three goals, saying some of the blame was on the midfielders.
For Mbami, it was a great day. He was very elated to have scored his first goals for the national team in any official competition.
The defeat puts Zimbabwe out of the tournament automatically. They have lost two games and even a win against Algeria in the third group game will not help them.
For coach Sunday Marimo, the Nations Cup was a good school. “Basically we came here to learn. Luckily, we are learning fast. We will certainly do better next time. We put up a good show against Egypt and Cameroon, getting the curtain raiser in both games. We have to avoid defeat against Algeria to return honourably”.
Zimbabwe were in their first Nations Cup finals and have never defeated Cameroon.
