Lions Leave Tunisia Today (10.02.2004)
After an auto-evaluation session yesterday, the official delegation to Tunisia returns home.
The lobby of El Mouradi Palace, the base of the Indomitable Lions in Sousse, Tunisia, could be compared to a little market yesterday morning. It was unusually crowded. Most of the guests were Cameroonians who came to communion with their fallen football heroes. They sat in little groups or simply strolled around the hall way. The one topic of discussion was the untimely elimination of their darling team, the Indomitable Lions, from the 24th African Cup of Nations last Sunday by the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Most of the officials and players are expected to leave Tunisia today for Yaounde.
"Where are the Lions?" In effect, most people who arrived at the hotel after 10:00am could not say with precision where the players were. Captain Song Bahanag and his mates were however in one of the conference halls of the hotel for a meeting with the Minister of Youth and Sports, head of the Cameroonian delegation to Tunisia.
The Minister explained that after the deception of last Sunday it was important that members of Cameroon’s official delegation meet for an auto-evaluation season before departure scheduled for today.
Roving Ambassador, Roger Milla, the representative of the Presidency of the Republic, the representative of the Prime Minister’s office, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, as well as those in charge of the administrative and technical management of the national team, took part in the meeting. It was a moment of truth.
The head of the medical unit, Dr Assamba, reassured the minister that the players were given adequate health care to ensure excellent performance. Mr Nguidjol of the administrative unit said the team prepared well for the competition but decried the disturbance of players by visitors during the competition. Captain Song was emphatic that the players put in the best. "It hurts that we were eliminated. But this does not mean we are bad grains", he said. Head coach, Winfried Schaffer said the team is full of talents. He however acknowledged the fact that the team did not play the way they wanted. "I will bring in more competitive players for the preparation of the 2006 World Cup", he said.
Minister Bidoung Mkpatt was bitter about Cameroon’s defeat and asked the administrative unit to point out where things went wrong. "If you fail, there should be a reason and we have to know", he said.
