Toon Lion bites back at critics (29.12.2007)
NEWCASTLE United midfielder Geremi has hit back at anybody who is questioning his will to win on the eve of his return to Stamford Bridge.
The Toon star was devastated after the Boxing Day defeat at Wigan and is keen to put things right at the club he left in the summer to make the switch to Tyneside.
The Cameroon ace has already explained how he coped with a culture shock when he moved to Newcastle and admitted there is no hiding place from the fanatical Toon Army compared to a much quieter life as a Chelsea player.
But with the pressure mounting on United ahead of their crunch trip to Stamford Bridge, Geremi revealed there is no worse feeling than losing, and snapped back at critics by claiming even a defeat on the PlayStation leaves him fuming, let alone being gunned down in the Premier League.
With Cameroon still tight-lipped over when Geremi will be required to link up with his country for the African Cup of Nations next month, the midfielder knows the clock is ticking ahead of one of the biggest tournaments of his life.
But he is determined to go to Ghana with a win under his belt – starting at his old club Chelsea.
Indomitable Lions star Geremi told the Chronicle: “This kind of game is one I would like to win but, make no mistake, I want to win every game I play in.
“I want to win if I take on a
friendon the PlayStation – it means a lot to me.
“Everybody wants to win games and win everything.
“It’s great to win because you can say you are the best and I am no different.
“We didn’t go to Wigan to lose.
“We restricted them to one chance and they scored. We have a big game at Chelsea and we must be ready.”
However, even the most optimistic Toon fan is heading for London fearing the worst. And nobody can blame them.
Indeed United have not won at the Bridge in 21 years, and no Premier League side has tasted victory there in almost four years since Arsenal triumphed back in February 2004.
Yet Geremi – who knows every nook and cranny at the famous venue – says: “We will still go there saying we can win.
“We lost at Wigan and we understand that we are under pressure. We have to get a result.”
Meanwhile, Geremi pleaded with the club’s fans to stay on their side at Stamford Bridge for what promises to be yet another white knuckle ride for the Toon faithful.
He told me: “I know that our fans are disappointed and for them I must say to them, we need you.
“We must stick together and try to be one unit. And we have to fight together.
“We have shown it in certain games this season and we now have to rediscover that.”
