Senegal make their mark (21.01.2002)
Senegal have shown that their qualification for the World Cup is thoroughly justified with a deserved win over Egypt at the Modibo Keita Stadium in Bamako.
The game was heading for stalemate before Lamine Diatta scrambled in a goal from a corner just seven minutes from time.
His header looped over Egypt`s goalkeeper Essam El-Haddary and squeezed under the crossbar.
El-Haddary has to take much of the blame for the goal.
He attempted to punch the ball clear, but failed to connect.
It was a deserved result for the Senegalese, who were a changed side in the second half.
Wasted chances
The Egyptian defence, marshalled by Hany Ramzy, had done a good job of containing the strike partnership of El Hadj Diouf and Henri Camara for the first 45 minutes.
But after the break the Senegalese looked more dangerous, and Diouf forced a number of good saves from El-Haddary.
And Senegal`s constant pressure eventually told,

even if the goal owed much to El-Haddary`s mistake.
The Lions could have doubled the margin just three minutes after scoring, but El-Haddary redeemed himself with a superb save from a one-on-one with Diouf.
In the closing stages Hazem Emam and Ahmed Hassan both had chances to draw the Pharaohs level.
But their efforts were found wanting and coach Mahmoud El-Gohary may well now be cursing the injury that looks like keeping veteran striker Hossam Hassan out of the tournament.
