We are proud of the Lions – Mohammed Iya (06.09.2005)
Martin Etonge
Hours after the Indomitable Lions more than half secured a fifth consecutive World Cup participation by beating Ivory Coast 3-2 in Abidjan, an elated FECAFOOT president declared how proud the football authorities were of the team.
President Mohammed Iya was leader of the technical delegation who executed the punitive excursion in Abidjan and return with the vital three points, which have enable Cameroon stand on top of Africa’s Group 3.
Hours after the win, the delegation was welcomed at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport by thousands of fans and football officials in a ceremony compared only to one after an African Cup of Nations win.
You must be a very happy president after such a big win?
Sure. I want to congratulate the players and coaches especially for this wonderful success which makes us almost sure of a place in the 2006 World Cup finals. I also extend my sincere congratulations to all those who laboured for this important win.
It was not an easy win, but we are grateful it all happened successfully. Now we have to work hard to finish the job at hand which is defeating Egypt in Yaounde next month in the last qualifier.
There was too much talk
about this game between Cameroon and Ivory Coast. What was the atmosphere like at your arrival in Abidjan?
I must confess that we experienced quite a different atmosphere from what was on the papers. We were properly received by the Ivorian football authorities and properly cared for. In deed the reception was excellent and I want to seize this opportunity to thank our Ivorian counterparts for their great spirit of fair play.
We encountered no organisational nor security problems. That was a sign of greatness which all federations in Africa should copy. We doff our hats to the Ivorian football federation.
Now Cameroon is almost in for another World Cup finals. What plans for the team?
Our immediate focus is on securing the ticket for the World Cup. Once that is done we’ll begin planning on how to prepare the team for the World Cup finals. You remember that our last participation was not good. So we’ll have to seat up when we next plan for a World Cup participation.
Beyond our participation we’ll be looking at means and ways of improving on the performances of our clubs, that is the domestic leagues which should regain its place as the base of the national team. Already, the little reforms are paying off.
