Schäfer: "Eto`o is brilliant" (03.02.2006)
Former Cameroon boss and Eurosport expert Winifred Schäfer describes Samuel Eto`o as "brilliant" and also thinks that surprise package Guinea are an outside bet ahead of his former employers` quarter final clash with Ivory Coast.
Schäfer also talks about "a great group stage in the African Nations... with more quality than two years ago in Tunisia."
"Who would have thought that Zimbabwe would have beaten Ghana and nearly made it through to the latter stages? We`ve seen great, technical, high-quality football, but we`ve also experienced some shocks. The team I particularly enjoyed watching was my old club Cameroon, who easily progressed to the quarter-finals with some lovely football."
"Samuel Eto`o was brilliant and has now blossomed after a poor World Cup qualification campaign. It`s not only because of his five goals that he`s been the best player in the tournament. His unbelievable technique, burst of pace and fantastic finishing have bedazzled the fans. In this kind of form, Eto`o is one of the top five strikers in the world."
ARROGANCE
"What particularly disappointed me is that some of the teams already qualified for the World Cup - such as Togo and Angola - have gone into the African Nations Cup games full of arrogance and carelessness. That`s backfired badly for these teams. I`m convinced that some of the managers of the teams that crashed out of the competition will be sacked before the World Cup."
"The World Cup is about a lot of money and prestige, and some of the federation officials can get nervous and put the brakes on it. With Angola, you have to maybe see that not a lot more is being put into the side, which is showing now."
"In the case of Togo, the much publicised dispute between top striker Emmanuel Adebayor and coach Stephen Keshi
hasbackfired on the team. As soon as discipline drops in an African side, you can bury any hopes of a good tournament."
ETO`O WINS DROGBA DUEL
"Some cracking games are awaiting us in the quarter-finals. In the crunch clash between Cameroon and the Ivory Coast, all eyes will be on the dual between Eto`o and Didier Drogba. The game will be more explosive due to a certain rivalry between the two."
"Neither allows the other more attention or even the greater international recognition. But for me, Eto`o is the more complete, tactically aware footballer. This isn`t the only reason why Cameroon will go further, but also because the "Indomitable Lions" are fired up in the African Nations Cup to lay the memories of a failed World Cup qualifying campaign to rest."
"So in the semi-final it will come down to a dual with Nigeria, who have convinced me so far and will win their quarter-final against title holders Tunisia. Egypt at home are a force to be reckoned with.
"The "Pharoahs" are very aggressive and are constantly pushed on by goalkeeper El-Hadary - in the same manner as a certain Oliver Kahn. That will be enough for them to progress, although DR Congo impressed me against Togo. They played so freely then, but I fear their light-heartedness won`t be enough against the hosts."
GUINEA GOOD BET
"Guinea`s appearances have pleased me a lot. This side was strong two years ago and with a better goalkeeper would have been a candidate for a spot in the final. Against Senegal - who also have a strong and young team - it should be a humdinger, but what with the carefree euphoria in the team, Guinea have it in them to reach the semi-finals."
