Marc-Vivien Foe lives on for ever (03.07.2003)

The sudden and dramatic passing on of Cameroon’s international midfielder, Marc-Vivien Foe has come to confirm the adage that good things do not last. However, like all good things, it is in dying that Foe will live for ever. The body may disappear, but the name will be eternal.
Much has been said about Foe’s death and much is still to be said about the fallen hero. His talent made him an exceptional player and his calm, reserved nature and deeds endeared him to the hearts of men. He has become a perfect example to many youths.
Tons of tears have flowed from the eyes of grief-stricken men and wailing women, as the world continues to pay tribute to Foe. Great people have bowed to the hero.
It has been difficult to console the weeping fans and family members who have been flooding the family residence in the Omnisport quarter in Yaounde. Foe’s father, Martin Amougou Foe who did not travel to France like Foe’s mother to watch his child play the Confederations Cup provided the most consoling words.
The deeply touched parent was religious. He said Foe’s death was the handiwork of God.
«Yougave me two sons and now You have decided to take one. I lay every thing in Your hands», he said.
Before leaving for France on Friday to join close family members, Martin Foe asked Cameroonians to put all in prayers. And many prayers have been said as people struggle to come to the reality that the footballer has passed on.
Many honours are al ready going to him. A new stadium in Lyon, where he played and died last Thursday will carry his name. A shocked FIFA president Sepp Blatter has announced that the next Confederations Cup will be called Foe’s Cup.
While waiting for several other acts, FECAFOOT suspended all football activities last weekend. CAF president, Issa Hayatou has also expressed his condolences to the family and CAF is working on the appropriate measure to honour Foe.
Condolence messages have come from all corners of the globe. Even non members of the bereaved family have received condolences from foreign friends.
This supplement is The Herald’s own way of paying tribute to the hero who performed his best to serve Cameroon and Africa. He has become a teacher of patriotism. Foe was a true Indomitable Lion.
