Njitap on World Cup prospects (08.12.2001)
Cameroon`s Real Madrid midfielder Geremi Njitap believes the competition in the World Cup groups is a reflection of the strength of the nations.
The five African representatives, Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Senegal and Tunisia, were drawn against some of the biggest teams in the world including France, Argentina, England, Germany and Spain, but the Indomitable Lions star said: "I expect the groups to be tight.
"This is only proof that the standard of the game in on the up and the gap between the teams is very small."
Writing on his own website, the Real Madrid star, who captained Cameroon to Olympic triumph last year, said he was looking
forward to the World Cup with enthusiasm.
"The draw has not in any way dampened our ambitions," he said. "We want to be amongst the best teams in the world and playing against the likes of Germany with three World Cup titles under their belt can only fire up our enthusiasm."
The midfielder is also upbeat about Real Madrid`s chances in the European Champions League.
"We are getting better and better and Zinedine Zidane has found his deft touch," he said. "If we keep it up, we will cruise to the final for the second time in two years, then anything can happen."
Real have won their two second-round games and are on their way to a quarter-final slot.
