Kalla faces German sanction (12.12.2003)
Kalla won more than 80 caps for Cameroon`s Indomitable Lions
Cameroon defender Raymond Kalla of Bundesliga side VfL Bochum has become the third African footballer to fall foul of doping procedures in recent months.
The 28-year-old broke doping rules by failing to report a medication he was taking for back pains and could be sanctioned, the German Football Association (DFB) revealed on Thursday.
The medication is not on the list of doping substances but has to be declared 72 hours before a league match, the DFB added.
The DFB said it had launched a disciplinary investigation after Kalla tested positive for the anti-inflammatory medication triamcinolone after the match
against Schalke on 19 October.
Bochum said it expected the former Cameroon international to be suspended for three matches, but the DFB said no decision had yet been taken on a possible sanction.
A spokesperson for the German association said Bochum did not risk losing points since the case was not considered as doping.
Kalla, who retired from international football after the 2002 World Cup finals, joined Vfl Bochum in June of that year.
In the last three months, two Africans playing in Italy - Inter Milan`s Sierra Leonean striker Mohammed Kallon and Perugia`s Libyan striker Al-Saadi Gaddafi - have tested positive for nandrolone and both face lengthy bans from football.
