Mboma Played for Sunderland (12.05.2002)
By Nick Alexander
Kevin Phillips saved his best until last to help Sunderland finally secure their Premiership place.
The Black Cats striker scored the all-important opening goal and put in an outstanding display as the top flight`s final relegation issue was decided.
By the time the England man had struck, in the 17th minute, news of Liverpool`s opener against Ipswich had filtered through to the Stadium of Light.
And it meant the Tractor Boys` already difficult task of trying to leapfrog Sunderland became near impossoble.
Peter Reid`s men put in an almost perfect first half performance and could have been three goals up by the interval.
But the game summed up their season in that they were made to pay for missed chances as Derby hit back with a sucker punch.
The Black Cats had numerous opportunities to grab the winner but were denied time and time again by outstanding Rams keeper Mart Poom.
Reid made one change to the side that drew at Charlton before, bringing in U.S. skipper Claudio Reyna for Paul Thirlwell.
For Derby, it was the start of a new era with The Rams already planning for life in the First Division. Boss John Gregory fielded a young side which included teenage debutant Ian Evatt.
Sunderland needed a point to make sure of their survival. If not, they were reliant on the game 160 miles away at Anfield, where Ipswich needed to beat Liverpool to stand any chance of staying up.
The Black Cats` draw at The Valley at least boosted their confidence going into the last game, which has been drained after a run of just one win in eight games.
Reid, however, could not select his strongest side as Gavin McCann was missing through suspension, just as he was at Charlton. But at least Reyna was back in business.
The Wearside faithful showed their desire to help Sunderland by giving Reid`s men a rousing reception when they appeared from the tunnel and it sparked the home side into a decent start.
Thomas Butler, making his second start, fed Reyna in the third minute and the American forced a save from Poom. It was a sign of things to come.
In Malcolm Christie The Rams have a Premiership-quality striker and only a last-ditch tackle from Jody Craddock denied him a shot in the fifth minute, bit it was a rare attack for Gregory`s side.
Sunderland should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Butler cut inside and whipped in a cross-cum-shot which struck the post before evading Niall Quinn and Phillips who were waiting for the rebound.
Quinn, who will take centre stage at the same venue on Tuesday for his tribute game, then missed a glorious chance from a Jason McAteer cross, side-footing right at Derby`s Estonian keeper from
eightyards out.
It was all Sunderland in the opening spell and Phillips was inches away from a spectacular opener in the 12th minute, volleying Butler`s cross just over. Sunderland`s top scorer then just failed to connect with Kevin Kilbane`s cross.
Phillips broke the deadlock in the 17th minute and by that stage the Stadium of Light crowd had scented survival when news filtered through of Liverpool`s first of five against Ipswich.
Sunderland`s top scorer raced onto Quinn`s flick but dallied, allowing Warren Barton to put in a great block. The Former Newcastle man then ruined his good work by getting in a tangle with Poom, allowing Phillips to gratefully walk the ball over the line.
The goal relaxed the home side and Derby were forced into some desperate defending, with Phillips, who looked back to his best, twice going close to a second.
Sunderland`s relegation worries were all but over when news arrived of Liverpool`s second goal in the 35th minute.
Poom had to be alert to tip over Phillips` curling effort from 20 yards in the 39th minute. Then from the resulting corner the England striker headed against the underside of the bar from Kilbane`s flick with Poom well beaten.
The Black Cats, who could have easily gone in at half-time with a three goal lead, also went close before Phillips` opener through the impressive Butler, the 21-year-old smashing a left foot shot just over the bar.
Derby`s only first half threat of note came from a 30th minute header by Evatt who was only denied a goal on his debut by the alertness of Thomas Sorensen.
It was the display Reid was looking for and Sunderland were cheered from the field at half time after playing some of their best football of the season.
Butler, who was just behind Phillips in the man of the match stakes, tried his luck from long range in the 52nd minute but Poom was ready to make the save.
Sunderland`s second half show was less dynamic and chances were few and far between, although Craddock twice went close with headers and Michael Gray shot wide following a good move in the 65th minute.
Derby hit back against the run of play in the 68th minute, through substitute Marv Robinson who slotted home after poor marking by the home side.
Substitute Patrick Mboma should have restored Sunderland`s lead in the 77th minute but he headed McAteer`s cross right at Poom from close range, although credit must be given to the County keeper.
The World Cup-bound striker then fired in a left foot shot which Poom saved as Sunderland bombed forward in search of a second.
Poom capped a fantastic display by making a brilliant one-handed save to deny Reyna with two minutes to go, but Sunderland only had themselves to blame for not winning.
