Pr. Guillaume Atchou : "The Lions Have Never Consumed Drugs" (06.10.2005)
Pr. Guillaume Atchou, medical doctor of the national football team says the doping accusation on the Lions is ridiculous.
An article published in an Ivorian newspaper last week stated that the good results of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon obtained since 1990 is a result of performance enhancing substances consumed by the players. As the medical doctor of the team, what have you to say about this allegations?
I have also heard about this news item of the Ivorian paper which says all Lions systematically dope before all their matches. This is a aberration. It is ridiculous. We have to be realistic. Massive doping is not possible in sports. It is an illusion because it is not possible to dope as a group. Secondly, we know that before every match, players are selected at random for anti doping tests. A Cameroonian player has never tested positive for doping. This notwithstanding, as tradition holds, before every match, we submit a list of all the products which our players consume. These products, as you can well imagine, are not products for doping.
What about the claim that the Lions use asthma drugs to dope?
This is not the first of such an accusation. We all know the illness known as asthma and we all know the products that can be used to treat it. We do not treat someone for asthma when he doesn’t have the disease. So, we can’t offer our players such drugs because none of them is an asthma patient. Secondly, asthma products are meant to help the respiratory process of patients when they are in
crisis. It cannot help a person who is not sick. So we cannot give an anti asthmatic product to people who are not asthmatic. This is because all medicine have secondary effects. Thirdly, those with asthma are not advised to practice intensive sports. This is because physical efforts is a stimulus to asthma crisis which at times can be fatal. So, as a medical doctor, I cannot advice an asthmatic patient to practice sports.
The article also talks of a concoction which the Lions take before their encounters. Has this ever been the case?
A concoction of what? I can assure you that during our training camp, players of the national football team have no contact with strangers. So, I don’t see how it is possible for them to drink concoctions under the pretext that it will enhance their performances. I am a medical doctor and have a scientific way of looking at things. I do not think that we have a portion that would enhance the performance of 22 players. I follow up these players very closely. So the allegations have no base, are unfounded and make no sense.
Why would you someone write such a derogatory report?
The article is simply an agitation of Ivorians who do not yet understand how they were beaten by Cameroon in Abidjan. I can confirm that no player of the national football team of Cameroon has ever consumed performance enhancing substances. Before every match, we make a control and after every match, two players are selected at random and tested by FIFA for doping. None of them have ever tested positive.
