Match abandoned in South Africa after players attack referee (13.08.2001)
A South African Premier Soccer League match was abandoned after 85 minutes Sunday when Orlando Pirates players attacked the referee.
Defending champions Pirates, who were trailing Ajax Cape Town 1-0 in a second-round fixture at Newlands Stadium, reacted aggressively as referee Paulo Marques prepared to caution midfielder Josep Ngake.
/>Numerous Pirates pushed Marques, who had already angered the visitors by awarding Ajax a goal after 52 minutes when a Brent Carelese shot struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced over the line and came out.
Pirates players chased Marques around the pitch, and Nigeria-born captain and goalkeeper Williams Okpara was cautioned.
