FECAFOOT Slams Govt Over Interference (30.04.2004)
Assistant Secretary General of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Prince Esoka Ndoki Mukute has descended hard on his government`s interferance in the governance of the game, which has caused some bad blood openly celebrated by the media here.
Speaking in his Tsinga office in the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde with THISDAYSports yesterday, the experienced administrator said, "Government should be bold enough to allow us to run football in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the game as set by FIFA."
According to him, "a situation where the national team is run from the ministry, employing the technical crew from the ministry is not ideal. There are limits to these and where we do not manage it well, it may derail the game`s attention and force our hand backward."
He advised the government to be honourable in "giving out a goat gift along with the rope. FECAFOOT deserves its autonomy to
runfootball. We are only fighting for the ideal and not the extra-ordinary."
On the FIFA disciplinary committee decision to extract six points from her World Cup qualifying matches, Mukete said, "This is a new orientation of the laws governing football. We have checked and no where does such a rule exist. Football is a game governed by rules and should be strictly followed."
He was, however, optimistic that FIFA will change the decision of the disciplinary committee in accordance with its existing disciplinary statutes. "A fine would be okay as a deterence. Even the fine is about a quarter of the Federation`s annual budget," he said.
Speaking in the same vein, the Sports Editor of the Cameroon Tribune, the country`s leading daily, Simon Pierre Etoundi said. "The decision is a rude shock to Cameroon football fans who are praying that FIFA accepts our apologies and up turn the decision of their disciplinary committee."
