Indomitable Lions Thomas Nkono in Command (03.06.2009)

What started as rumour was finally confirmed by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Thierry Edjoa. Ace goalkeeper, Thomas Nkono was appointed the interim coach of the Indomitable Lions last Monday June1. Thomas Nkono’s appointment follows the resignation of German born Otto Pfister, due to differences with the college of trainers recently appointed to assist him. Nkono will have the responsibility to assure the interim at a time when Cameroon is struggling to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Thomas Nkono will hardly have time for merry making given that the Lions have two crucial matches ahead which will determine whether Cameroon will make it to South Africa or not. Next June 7, the Lions who are presently training in Belgium, will lock horns with the Atlas Lions of Morocco before travelling to Libreville-Gabon on June 20 to challenge the Panthers after a friendly in Abidjan against Côte d’Ivoire. Nkono is
starting on a good footing with the return of Pierre Wome Nlend to the national team and the last batch of players who were expected at the training camp in Belgium.
Thomas Nkono is no newcomer to the national team having joined the squad in 1999 as trainer of goalkeepers. Together with Pierre Lechantre, they won the African Cup of Nations in 2000. He left the Lions in 2003, only to comeback in the same capacity in 2007. As a player, Thomas Nkono was five times champion of Cameroon with Canon of Yaounde, two times African Champions league winner still with Canon. He was finalist at the UEFA Cup in 1988 with Espanyol of Barcelona. He also won the Bolivian championship title twice with Bolivar La Paz football club.
With the national team, Thomas Nkono won the African Cup of Nations in 1984 and was finalist in 1986. He took part in the Lion’s memorable Italia 1990 expedition when Cameroon was eliminated at the quarter finals of the World Cup. On his individual performance, Thomas Nkono alias the Black Spider, was two times African footballer of the year in 1979 and 1982.
