Egyptian national team preview (18.01.2002)

General article on Egypt national team for the African Cup of Nations:
"President Mubarak tells all of you that he would be honoured to receive you back home with the coveted trophy once again, just like four years back when he welcomed you at the airport after winning the African Cup prize in Burkina Faso."
With a glance at the Egyptian build-up to the finals, it would be safe stating the Pharaohs need more than just presidential blessings if to achieve positive results later this month, as the words, spelt by president Mubarak`s elder son, Ala`a, 37, came during his visit to the training camp just outside Cairo on Wednesday, where he met the technical staff and players before tripping to Mali, via Paris.
Egypt, all-time participants in the championship on 17 occasions, compared to Algeria`s 11, are paired in Group D with Senegal, Tunisia and Zambia, and are scheduled to kick off their campaign next Sunday when they take on Senegal in their inaugural outing.
The Pharaohs` preparation campaign left many things to be desired, if to believe manager Mahmoud El-Gohary, following their latest 2-2 home draw against Burkina Faso last Friday: "I have to say we suffer from various problems in the current squad - many players have the unprofessional knack of underestimating the opposition sides, added to the fact of the sudden faltering of the all-rounding regarding many key outfits, something to be worked on quite heavily before kicking off the competition."
30 players were used by the manager during all four friendly outings, distracting the cohesion amongst the Pharaohs` ranks, with only five figures making it to the first-team choice
ona regular basis: Keeper Issam Al-Hadhari, the three German-based outfits Hani Ramzy as sweeper and full-backs Mohamed Amara and Yasser Radwan, and Ajax centre-forward Ahmed Hossam.
Yet, El-Gohary, whose personal decisions at the technical level are still strongly criticized by the local observers for adopting a very cautious scheme of play, embarked into a real dogfight with league champions Zamalek over his selection of veteran centre-forward Hossam Hassan despite having a serious knee injury, currently being nursed at a special clinique in Paris.
German coach Otto Pfister was adamant at the player`s selection by El-Gohary, fearing a recurring problem to Hassan`s knee in the African Cup will deal his club side Zamalek a severe blow of retaining the league title for the second year running.
Personal relationships have long played a leading role in the Pharaohs` squads over the last two decades, and taking into account the 14-year story between El-Gohary (the-then Al-Ahly manager) and Hassan, during which the phenomenal striker stirred the national team to the 1990 Italian World Cup venture before claiming 7 goals to help the side winning the 1998 African Cup prize in Burkina Faso, chances were remote Hassan would be left in the Parisian clinique.
Egypt witnessed mixed fortunes in their build-up for the African Cup of Nations, starting their warm-up campaign with a 2-2 away draw against unfashionable Qatar in Doha, before beating Ghana 2-0 at home.
Young Malian national side gave the Pharaohs` ego a thunder blow with a 2-1 defeat in Ismailia city, before the side could only content with a 2-2 draw against visitors Burkina Faso later on.
