Kanu backs Nations Cup shift (19.12.2001)
Super Eagles striker Nwankwo Kanu wants Caf to move the dates of the African Cup of Nations in future to resolve the club versus country rows over players.
The player, with English Premiership club Arsenal, is suggesting the Nations Cup dates coincide with the European Championships.
"Unless Caf shifts the Nations Cup dates, the foreign-based players will continue to have problems with their clubs over attending the tournament," Kanu told BBC Sport Online.
The Nations Cup, a biennial event, is played in the first quarter of the year - a busy period for some European leagues.
The tournament in Mali will be played between January 19 and February 10, and the competing countries will be relying on their overseas-based players.
Kanu said: "The tournament is important in Africa and for all African players. Your country needs you but the club also needs the player as well.
"So, it becomes difficult for the player to strike the right balance."
Mali important
Apart from the Nations Cup period, the countries do also have a tug of war with clubs over the release of players for other internationals.
Kanu himself has been at the centre of rows between Arsenal and the Nigerian FA over his release in the past.
The twice African Player of the Year remained with the Highbury side and missed playing for Nigeria in the football tournament at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
He said he has learnt from that experience and will play for Nigeria in Mali, where they are grouped with the hosts, Algeria and Liberia.
"I
believe it`s important for me to be in Mali," said Kanu.
"I`ve had chats with Arsenal officials and, of course, they know if I don`t go, I can`t play for the club either during the period."
Football calendar
Fifa, world football`s governing body, had set out a raft of regulations in a bid to resolve the club versus country disputes.
But this only helped to increase the friction.
Fifa is now hoping its "uniform world football calendar", which will come into effect in January 2002, will finally solve the problem.
The calendar will harmonise the football dates of all its member countries, Fifa said.
Kanu tasted defeat with Nigeria in the 2000 Nations Cup, where Cameroon beat them on penalties to win the trophy.
It was his first Nations Cup outing, and the striker reckons his country could lift the trophy in Mali for a third time in their history.
Sympathy
"I hope to score goals there and with the likes Jay-Jay Okocha, (Sunday) Oliseh and others, we can win the trophy," he said.
"But I know it`ll be difficult for us as one of the favourites."
He admitted it has not been a rosy time for him at Arsenal, where he has played a handful of games this season.
"It`s difficult to play regularly. We now have five strikers and the coach rotates the players to satsify everybody.
"And it`s been difficult to get the right rhythm and also score goals.
In 1996, Kanu won world-wide sympathy for having surgery to cure a rare heart disease in order to return to the game.
