Group Three preview (06.06.2004)
Cameroon, bidding for a fifth consecutive World Cup appearance, should not be troubled by Benin in Yaounde as the Group Three campaign of 2006 World Cup qualifying begins on Sunday.
But head coach Winfried Schafer has declared that he is working under severe pressure.
Although Schafer declined to reveal what his problems were, Geremi Njitap told BBC Sport that the German`s difficulties may be linked to Cameroon`s poor performance at the 2004 Cup of Nations.
But other commentators think Schafer is worried about his unpaid salary, as well as other allowances yet unsettled.
The German is reported to have gone without his salary since December 2003 and has scheduled a meeting with new sport minister, Etame Massouma, to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, Joseph Desire Job and Lauren Etame Mayer will be absent from the Indomitable Lions line up.
Captain Rigobert Song said Job is busy securing his future with English club Middlesbrough, as his contract has expired, while Lauren was still reluctant to return to the team after he retired in June 2002.
Libya may lie
three places above Ivory Coast on the African rankings but stand little chance of survival in Abidjan on 6 June.
Drogba is expected to play a key role for the Ivory Coast
With a squad made up of Marseille`s Didier Drogba, Arsenal`s Kolo Toure and Aruna Dindane of Anderlecht, the Ivorians are in with a serious chance of qualifying for their first World Cup finals.
A resounding victory would be a morale booster for their tougher encounter against Egypt on 18 June.
Meanwhile, Egypt face an awkward test away to unpredictable Sudan.
Midfielder Tamer Abdel Hamid was left out of the squad with a few hours before their departure to Khartoum, as he sustained an ankle injury.
Mohamed Abdalla, broke his wrist in their friendly against Gabon, Tarek Said is down with a hamstring and first choice goalkeeper, Abdel-Wahed El Sayed is nursing a groin injury.
But Hazem Emam remains in the squad despite the recent death of his daughter after childbirth.
The 2006 World Cup qualifiers double as qualifiers for the 2006 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
