Spanish roundup : Eto`o scores 18th as Barça wins 11th straight game (09.01.2006)
MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Samuel Eto`o scored his 18th goal of the season on Saturday and leader FC Barcelona won its 11th straight league game, 2-1 over crosstown rival Espanyol as La Liga resumed after a 16-day winter break.
Midfielder Deco opened the scoring for the defending champion, which extended its advantage in the standings to five points with a club record 15th straight victory in all competitions.
Deco was taken to the hospital for tests following a 58th-minute collision of heads with teammate Thiago Motta, which caused him to briefly lose consciousness, news agency Efe reported.
The report added the Portugal international was suffering from a slight concussion and was not believed to have been seriously hurt.
In Saturday`s other game, Deportivo La Coruna downed Athletic Bilbao 2-1 to climb to third place.
Barcelona has 43 points, while Osasuna, which hosts Racing Santander on Sunday, has 38. Deportivo is tied for third with Valencia, which visits Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Both teams have 32 points and identical goal differences.
On Sunday, fifth-place Villarreal entertains sixth-place Real Madrid.
Other matches Sunday have Sevilla vs. Malaga; Celta Vigo vs. Real Sociedad; Mallorca vs. Real Betis; Cadiz vs. Getafe; and Alaves vs. Zaragoza.
Barcelona`s hopes of continuing its unbeaten streak -- it has not lost in the league since a third-round defeat on Sept. 18 against Atletico Madrid -- initially were hampered by wet and windy conditions at Espanyol`s Lluis Companys Olympic stadium and goalkeeper Carlos Kameni, who denied defender Juliano Belletti in the
20th minute. Lionel Messi also came close 14 minutes later.
Kameni, who had saved from Ronaldinho only seconds earlier, appeared to misjudge Deco`s low shot from the edge of the area, diving to his right only to see the ball skip over his legs and into the goal a minute before halftime.
Barcelona, which has lost just once in its 18 league games this season, doubled its lead in the 47th minute when Eto`o took full advantage of Ronaldinho`s through ball by steering the ball past his compatriot Kameni.
The Cameroon striker has eight goals more than its closest challengers in the Spanish league this season, Ronaldinho and Valencia`s David Villa.
Two minutes after Deco`s withdrawal, Espanyol scored when captain Raul Tamudo controlled midfielder Fredson`s crossfield ball and lifted it over advancing goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
Deportivo, whose victory was its fourth straight on the road, owed both its goals at San Mames stadium to defensive mistakes by Bilbao.
Central defender Fernando Amorebieta, who tracked back with teammate Jesus Maria La Cruz, turned the ball into his own net in the 24th minute after making a sliding attempt to clear Deportivo midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron`s low cross.
After substitute Ismael Urzaiz had headed in Bilbao`s equalizer in the 58th, goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia allowed striker Angel Arizmendi`s poked shot from Pedro Munitis` free kick to pass through his legs, restoring Deportivo`s lead seven minutes later.
Bilbao, which has never been relegated but has won just two of its nine home games this season, remained in 17th place with 15 points.
