Striker Eto`o puts his team first (03.05.2006)
Barcelona striker Samuel Eto`o says he is unconcerned about the possibility of being deprived of top spot in the Spanish scoring charts as long as his side manage to retain the title and win the Champions League.
Last season the 25-year-old was pipped by Villarreal striker Diego Forlan, who produced a late surge to reach 25 goals, one more than the Cameroon international.
This time Eto`o once again heads the list of leading scorers, but Valencia striker David Villa is closing fast and is now just one behind with 23.
"I`m not obsessed by it," Eto`o told sports daily AS on Tuesday. "If I was allowed to choose I would much rather win the league and the Champions League.
"I score goals because it is my job and to help Barcelona win games, not because I want to end the season as top scorer.
"At the start of the season I set myself a target to beat the number of goals I scored last year in all competitions and I`ve done that. Last time I scored 29 and this time I`m already on 31."
Victory at fifth-placed Celta Vigo would assure the Catalan team of a second straight title and 18th overall.
Barcelona will also be free to uncork the champagne if second-place Valencia fail to win at lowly Mallorca in an earlier game.
Barcelona expect Ronaldinho to play against Celta Vigo ,despite a heavy cold, and defender Oleguer Presas is available again after recovering from a muscle strain.
Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores says his team is obliged to "postpone Barcelona`s title for as long as possible."
However, the principal interest of the 2002 and 2004 champion is to finish the season as runners-up and gain a berth in the group stages of next season`s Champions League.
Valencia have increased their chances
byembarking on a five-game winning streak, in which they have netted 16 times.
"It`s a shame our run didn`t start earlier. We`re doing well but I hope next season we can challenge for the title from the very first game," Valencia right back Miguel said.
Unbeaten in 10 games, Real Madrid are also battling hard for second place, which would provide them with a little consolation.
The troubled club, expected to hold presidential elections in July, has failed to win a trophy for the third straight season, their worst streak since the early 1950s.
On Thursday, Madrid visit relegation-threatened Racing Santander, who won 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in December.
Full league debut
Madrid will be without suspended goalkeeper Iker Casillas. His replacement, Diego Lopez, will make his full league debut.
Zinedine Zidane, who announced last week he will retire after the World Cup, is expected to return from suspension, while Ronaldo may have to wait until the weekend before ending a three-week absence because of a right thigh injury.
Julio Baptista, who scored the winning penalty against Osasuna on Sunday, is doubtful with a sprained right ankle. Thomas Gravesen is injured, while Jonathan Woodgate will not play again this season.
Osasuna are ken to enhance their chances of a top-four finish and a Champions League debut next season when they travel to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
At the foot of the standings, several teams are battling to avoid the fate of Malaga, who have become the first team to be relegated this season.
Alaves and Cadiz, both of whom were promoted last season, are in the greatest danger.
On Wednesday 19th placed Alaves hosts Real Betis, while Cadiz, 18th, entertain Real Sociedad.
