Geremi to become British citizen
by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle
NEWCASTLE United skipper Geremi has missed out on an energy-sapping 12,000-mile trip to Japan – because he is becoming a British citizen.
And the amiable Cameroon international hopes to feel the benefit when he leads United out against his former club Middlesbrough in Sunday’s lunch-time televised game at The Riverside Stadium.
Geremi was due to play for Cameroon in their friendly with Japan in Kyushu when he would have picked up his 61st cap for his country and it was assumed that when he did not go, he was injured.
But he told me today: “No, I am not injured. What happened is that I am applying for British citizenship because I have been in this country for five years.
“So I had to get my documents and passport to the Home Office this week. My lawyer took them and that is the reason I could not travel.
“I am proud to play for my country but this had been taken out of my hands.”
Sam Allardyce will not mind in the least that Geremi stayed on Tyneside this week, along with Obafemi Martins who did not go to Skopje for Nigeria’s friendly with Macedonia because of an injury which will not keep him out of Sunday’s short trip to Teesside.
And Big Sam will be putting to the back of his mind the fact that he will be without both Martins and Geremi for around six weeks in January and February when the Africa Cup is staged.
But it’s not something new to the United boss who had so many African players in his time as manager of Bolton Wanderers.
The same will apply when United when finally tie up the signing of Abdoulaye Faye, but the whole situation seems to be dragging on a bit.
United had a day off today and they were waiting for word confirming their players had come through last night’s international unscathed.
Stephen Carr played the full 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland in their win over Denmark and they were hoping that it was a case of “no news is good news” from David Rozehnal with the Czech Republic.
And United were waiting to hear from Emre why he came off after 42 minutes in Romania and did not stay on at least until half-time.
Meanwhile when, or if, Faye signs, it will probably be Allardyce’s last acquisition in the current transfer window, with £20m having been spent on Joey Barton, Claudio Cacapa, Jose Enrique, Geremi, David Rozehnal, Alan Smith and Mark Viduka, although it has to be pointed out that three of them came in for nothing on Bosman transfers.
With Kieron Dyer and Scott Parker being sold to West Ham for £13m, this leaves big Sam’s net spending at £7m, which pales into insignificance by comparison to some of his Premiership rivals.
And it looks as though Allardyce can forget any hopes he had of bringing Brazilian international Juliano Belletti to St James’ Park, with Chelsea now eyeing the Real Madrid right-back.
Meanwhile, Allardyce says he has had no “official” bid or inquiries for Martins, and it looks as though Sir Alex Ferguson will not make an offer and instead switch his attention to Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, who would cost twice as much as Martins.
And the United boss told me today there is nothing on the table for Nobby Solano, who is still hoping to go to London or the south for family reasons.
