Tanzania stun Kenya

A spectacular stoppage time goal from veteran Salvatory Edward made sure of success for Tanzania in the Four Nations Cup final on Saturday.
The Taifa Stars beat neighbours Kenya 3-1 in the final in Mwanza in front of 30 000 fans.

Victory for Tanzania announced their return to the African stage after a year`s inactivity, some of it spent under suspension from FIFA.

Edward`s brilliant 40-metre drive settled the game just as the Harambee Stars were threatening a late onslaught.

Weathered

The home team weathered an early storm from the slick-passing Kenyans to go into the lead in the 26th minute through Yusuph Macho.

With Belgian-based John Muiruri dictating play, Kenya swarmed forward from the start and it seemed only a matter of time before they would score.

But Macho`s goal changed the complexion of the game even if Tanzanian captain Peter Manyinka was the busier of the two goalkeepers throughout the game.

Substitute Emmanuel Gabriel added a second in the 66th minute after a teasing cross from right winger Saidi Maulidi, who was later given the man of the match award.

To their credit, Kenya fought back and after making three substitutions and pushing most of their players forward, finally got one goal back when Robert Mambo headed home in the final five minutes.

Controversial

The crowd went silent as Kenya threatened a equaliser before Edward settled the game with the most dramatic of goals.

Uganda won the battle for third place in rather controversial circumstances after a 1-0 win over the DR Congo.

Alex Isabirye scored on his debut in the second half but the result was tainted by a bizarre refereeing decision.

Kenyan official Khamis Bhagazal awarded Congo an early penalty but then ordered a retake after Epotele Bazamba had netted the ball.

He then changed his mind, saying because the Congolese had encroached, they were offside and gave a free-kick to the Ugandans.

The Congolese staged a five minute sit-in before proceeding with the game but were disappointing in a match they used a preparation for the upcoming African Nations Cup finals.
