World football family buries Marc Vivien Foe
Martin Etonge
The very talented and disciplined Cameroon footballer, Marc Vivien Foe who died last 26 June has been laid to his final resting place in Okoui, Yaounde.
The nation was led to the funeral ground at the centre of the footballer´s uncompleted sports complex by Prime minister Peter Musonge and FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter after a church service in the Notre Dames des Victoires cathedral which was attended by President Paul Biya.
The mass was said by Bishop Owono Minboe. And for three hours there were prayers and eulogies. All speakers praised Foe as a man of excellent qualities.
FIFA president, Joseph S. Blatter who led the foreign delegation was very spiritual in his eulogy. After praising Foe he said: "This was a moment for reflections - reflections by football managers and reflections about our lives". Managers had to think about their use of players, while others had to reflect on how they lived their lives.
For Blatter, though it was a moment of sadness, it was also a moment of celebration and said he was happy with the way Cameroonians had come out to celebrate the transition of Foe.
CAF president, Issa Hayatou said Foe was a perfect example to all, a footballer who had enabled African football to illuminate the world.
FECAFOOT president disclosed how the federation was shattered by the death of Foe, after providing a career profile the fallen hero.
Over 200 football managers from local levels were brought to Yaounde by FECAFOOT to attend the three-day funeral ceremonies.
Other eulogies came from skipper Rigobert Song who said Foe´s death gave the players a feeling of emptiness.
Gerard Herault, general manager the French football federation cried out that death was cruel to have taken away Foe. He addressed his condolences to the bereaved family before saying the world will never forget Foe.
Joseph Mbende who spoke on behalf of the elite of Mefou and Afamba division and Joseph Nkono Owona who spoke for the bereaved family appealed for goodwill to complete Foe´s sports complex.
A short ceremony comprising of traditional rites, military honours and a posthumous decoration of Foe as commander of the national order of valour led to the lowering of the corpse.
