Geremi sends Lions to semis
An injury time penalty from Geremi gave Cameroon a 1-0 victory over Turkey and sent the Indomitable Lions into the semi finals of the Confederations Cup.
Geremi took his opportunity to put the Lions into the last four following a disputed foul in the area on Joseph-Desire Job,
The victory is the second major upset by Cameroon after they beat Brazil in their opening match.
But the victory sparked angry scenes from the mostly Turkish fans, who threw bottles of water and other projectiles onto the pitch, while fights broke out in the stands.
Cameroon will now play the United States in the semi finals on Monday.
Turkey, though, with only three points from two games will need to beat five-time world champion Brazil if they hope hope to get through to Thursday´s other semifinal.
Servet Cetin was the one responsible for the foul on Job, grabbing him around the waist and pulling him down just inside the penalty box.
Geremi, who had missed a number of scoring opportunities throughout the match, did not let the last-gasp opportunity go by.
The African champions missed a number of opportunities early on, the first when captain Rigobert Song took a free kick and Manchester City midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe´s header went just wide of the goal.
Samuel Eto´o, who scored a great goal in Cameroon´s 1-0 upset of Brazil on Thursday, also sent a header wide despite the open net, wasting an easy chance.
Rustu Recber had to make repeated saves as his defenders were lacklustre, leaving gaping holes for the quick Cameroon forwards.
Turkey missed a golden opportunity a later in the first half when Servet rose into the air for a header that goalie Idriss Kameni had no chance to stop, but was saved when the ball edged over the cross bar.
As missed opportunities continued, tempers flared, and Yildiray Basturk and Song both got slapped with yellow cards, after Cameroon´s captain swung in with his elbows at Basturk, ending in a shouting match.
In the second half the Turkish players began to claim more possession, and looked dangerous.
Their best opportunity came when Cameroon keeper Kameni came out too far for a ball that Tuncay Sanli quickly deflected to the open net.
The ball appeared to go in but Lucien Mettomo flew into the goal mouth, clearing the ball in midair.
